[In this special post, we tell you - in exclusive - the tour diary appositely written by Federica 'Faith' Sciamanna, vocalist and co-leader of the alternative rock band THE SHIVER, that will brings us within the European Tour, supporting for the Finnish THE RASMUS, inside the promotional tour of their latest album 'Dark Matters', released at October 2017 for the label Playground Music Scandinavia. Have a nice trip with THE SHIVER!!!]

Puntata 7 - Tuesday 23 October, h 10:00 am - At the moment I am... on the road to Manchester. [After an intense day-off in London, from our friends Marco and Laura, that lives here from many years to make career and they are very happy, the morning after, very early, we are on travel to Norwich. The sun continues to follow us, but the weather is very cold and wet.]

Day off in Camden Town, London

A coffee on the road

[The Waterfront is just on the water, and the dressing-rooms have a throw of cold air that make them really inhospitables. Outside the venue, there are already some superfans of The Rasmus, and we meet a girl that was with us in Germany also, obvsiously in the front row!]

[‘Cause of the lack of rest and the wet, my health isn’t in improvement, and my voice is always very slow and weak. Moreover, many days with antibiotics made me KO, and the only thing I can do today is to cower on a sofa, into the cold backstage, with the pile blanket above that my lovely friend Sandy presented me. Also MJ, the girl of which I was talking before, is a little worried, and she’s so kind that sends me in the room some honey, medicines and various little presents.]

Sweet honey from my friend MJ

[Meanwhile, the guys together with the crew of the venue load out all our objects, and soon after we make the soundcheck. The venue is low and full of heavy frequences, however the sound-engineers seem preparated and nice, and we don’t worry that much.]

[Meanwhile, it realizes what we feared. Two guys of the venue come in the backstage with two bags of food (really few things, since that we are nine persons), they let them on the table, and this is our catering. Dinner, in buy-out obviously: they give you some money, and you can go to buy whatever you want; but, at the end of the night, there will be no open shops.]

Alle 20:30 siamo on stage. [At 8:30 pm, we are on stage. The intro is full of bass sounds, and during all the first song everything whistles, and the notes are indistinct. At the second song, it seems that the sound-engineer has a little correct the throw, but on stage is really a delirium. I search to not overdo with my voice, and I stay on my safe range from sore throat: a lot of breath support, and no push. It demonstrates a good strategy. The people is very  observant at all we make, and it’s a pleasure to play in front of an audience so interested.]

[After the show, we obtain a lot of positive feedbacks, also about the voice (!!) and we talk with many people of the city.]

[Aside the hungry, it’s just a beautiful night! 11:30 pm curfew, and we drive to Newcastle, searching for a service area.]

[One more time in UK, we play inside an University. Just arrived, the city is in full swing, students that round in the town center to make party. Newcastle is modern, rich and full of things to do. I’m going around the streets formed by small red bricks, searching for a travel phon for my hairs – my phon, unfortunately, is died last night! And I thrust in a shopping center where there is Boots. Inside they have everything. In the “Prescriptions” side there is a row of elders, and on the various shelves everything is cataloged for type in an obsessive way: there’s no written, for example, vaccines, but there’s written “anti-malaria medicines”, and next there’s other specific thing, based to the place where you have to go. Here in UK, everything is always eased for the people, from the spot-tv to the road signs, from the apps of public transport to the instructions for everything use. In Italy, instead we are very trained to make function always the brain, if you don’t be smart, you don’t survive. Obvious that, if one person get used to live here or in another civilized city (Berlin, New York, etc.), it would not be able more to be self-sufficient with us.]

Qui direttamente niente catering, e siamo tutti affamati come i lupi e molto nervosi purtroppo. A caso). [Said this, the venue is wonderful and very modern, all white. Big stage, there’s a big space alla round to le tour instruments already assembled; the only flaw: dressing-room not INEXISTENT, but I can say maybe INOPPORTUNE. Us and the Overlaps are wasted inside a 2x3 room, and it’s impossible to stay. The Rasmus, instead, are directly on the tourbus, and also their backstage is so little. Here, directly no catering, and we are all very hungry like wolves, and also so nervous. I don’t understand what there’s of difficult to put your guests at ease; moreover the production of the venue is composed by very gentle people. We start the soundcheck and the sound-engineer assistant is missed, result: the boss that is with is is very very lazy, and for all the night he will work with us at random. The sounds he makes us are very good, but when we go to the stage, he changed everything. Even, he added some microphones on the drums (?! Random). The intro starts, and the system is off outside, and obviously in our ears we don’t understand nothing. Why make the soundcheck, when after it’s all different?! Oh my God, why…??]

[The promoter is very nice, and before the show he accompanies me to take something to eat in a pub that cooks some fantastic Burritos, also if they are full of garlic. The cook offers to cook something just for me, he’s lovely, but unfortunately rice, onion and lettuce… it’s not just the best. However, I bring with me some hot food, and it’s just something. And then, finding nice people is priceless, make me on a good mood.]

[I back to the venue, and it’s almost our turn. My voice is going better, also if it doesn’t at 100%, but it’s improving. The fever and the blunder doesn’t exist anymore, antibiotici s finished and I’m decreasing the medicines. This damned microbe started from the Rasmus tourbus at the beginning of the tour, and it’s punishing all together. Also someone of Overlaps (Gloria is already felt bad) starts to feel bad. Unfortunately, when we stay in small spaces, with many people, the infection is unavoidable. Can I admit that this thing suck me a lot?]

[8:00 pm, and we are on stage. The beginning of the show is compromized ‘cause of that bullshit of the sound-engineers – thank you so much! On the first song the sound is all very confused, and there are tons of feedbacks from the microphones placed random. My guys are very angry – it’s not the first time that we find unqualified people that are very indolent to work, and we search fastly to remedy giving all our power on stage. The people seems to appreciate a lot, luckily.]

[About me, I’m fine. Last days are full of shit ‘cause of weakness inside me, and by now I’m very used to it since many years to sing without hearing nothing but noise, so sincerely I don’t make ever the problem of listenings, but obviously it shouldn’t be ever so. Listen the voice on stage, is always fantascience, and it’s my choice to avoid always the in-ear: they inhibit me to hear the crowd, moreover I don’t bear to have with me the make-up, never mind some wires with whom to funker all the night – such happened every time I tried to attach on a receiver that duly ended to the ground, under my feel in tons of pieces.]

[Result at the end of the night: a good live, but my guys are very angry.]

  • [Raffaele Pisani asks: Faith, since that you dealed with influential symptoms in this tour, according to your experience, which can it be the best remedy to make up on stage at these problems?]
  • [Faith answers: The love of fans :) Absolutely! Many many people wrote me, supporting  the choice to go on stage however, and many people at the venues gave me some presents (honey, tachiflu, and various chocolates and sweetness!), and this fill me with positivity and joy! Technically, a sore throat or a bronchitis doesn’t let you without voice, but if the microbe shots at the larynx, unfortunately you can make really a few. The only thing, if remains a thread of voice, is to manage great the hiatus, because if you start to make some high volume at the voice, after two songs it nothing comes out anymore, and here instead it’s about concerts for all the days – since when I’m sick, they were almost 11. So, to have studied a right emission, without effort, without throat, with a good diaphragmatic support is fundamental. To have studied the various illnesses and the dysphonias, and what to behave to the vocal chords, is fundamental. Keep calm and no panic, is fundamental. The show isn’t only technician, the show is what you communicate, and never like these shows they made me some congratulations (also for the voice, incredibly!)]
Vix'n'roll!!

Sabato 20 arriviamo a Nottingham a metá mattinata. [Saturday 20, we arrive in Nottingham at half-morning. Short preamble: since 2007 we play in this town every tot of time, and every time passing front of “Rock City”, we wished very dearly to play here, and finally this day is arrived! Obviously I know, we are opening for The Rasmus, but however it’s a beautiful thing for us and we are very happy!]

[The rear entrance of the venue isn’t beautiful like the main entrance… contrarily, there is, into the open space, an enormous box for the waste that issues a bad smell… the backstage of the showbusiness… All the entry doors of stage and backstage have alarms, and there are some advices in which it prays to not let something of unattended outside, cause of thieves.]

Enorme, tutto in legno, acustica perfetta e tecnici molto molto bravi e simpatici! Che spettacolo! [The backstage is very small, but at the end it’s fine, it has a good shower – in which I will entry, like always, only with my flip flops! The stage is fabolous! Enormous, full of wood, perfect sound and very very smart and nice technicians! What a show!]

[The soundcheck spins smooth, and we have some time to relax and have dinner, finally tonight there’s a catering and, for dinner, they make us good and healty things! For me, there’s a special veggie menu, and I’m very very happy.]

[About 6:00 pm, I meet with a long time friend, Leo, former bass player of Illuminatus (what a wonderful band!), and his girlfriend. Leo, Calabrian, is here since many years and works as chef. He tells me that the musical scene of the city is slowing, the venues – also the Rock City – make pop disco and the audience at metal concerts is low, so many venues are closing. The whole world is a country, what a pity!]

[At 7:00 pm I run to the backstage and I prepare myself to go on stage. I’m easy, my voice isn’t yet at the top, but I’ll bring home the result also tonight. I don’t know so well what to wait from there crowd, And I will go up with no agitation. The audience starts to shout  when we just go up, and it participates since the intro! On “Ocean” song, the wave of hands that are moving is blue, and it’s wonderful! From the second song, “Awaiting”, we find the right way to manage and to bring together all the power to the audience, dragging everybody in our dimension – like many people told me after the show. For me, that’s the aim of everything.]

[We let a very hot crowd, and soon after we meet the guys of TotalRock! Xander and Wendy are so nice and forgive our confusional status post-live! We go to the Rescue Rooms, a venue inside the venue, to drink a beer – and some lemonades – with calm, and to record the interview. I like so much the questions they make us, they’re both professional and funny! This question wins over all: “If you were a superhero, what superpower you would have?” J Obviously we are lucky, our band superhero is Morris!]

[We come back in time for the end of the show, and a lot of people comes to us to the Merch Stand, fill us of wishes! We meet also Giulia and Dino, some friends from our town that are relocated here to make career – and they are very satifsfied! And then, my girls of the front row! They are fantastic!]

Fans from the front row in Nottingham

[We disassemble everything very fastly, and since 11:00 pm the venue becomes a discotheque with three levels. We relax in the dressing room, but after a few time I can’t resist and I go make some noise. Surprisingly, many people reminds me and asks me autographs, pics, etc.! At the umpteenth rock song (mainstream) that starts, I put everybody in the crowd and we dance for a long time!]

[When I had enough of this, I retire in the dressing room, and I go stalking a band that played in the same venue, in the small stage: Gang of Four. During the night, I’ve seen some song of their live, and thy’re really cool! In the dressing room, I talk with them, they’re so nice and funny.]

[At the end of everything, there’s still time, and with three stages of people still dancing above me, I make an hot shower, and when I exit, I see that my guys ordered some pizza! Can it be there a better night?]

[The road to Glasgow is long and full of road works. There’s a point in which we pass from Cumbria to Scotland, where everything becomes dark green, and each hill is covered by sheeps and sheeps, and still sheeps. The lakes glimpse in some pieces of  the highway, and they make you want to push more over North, to explore this wild region. For example, I really would to see Inverness and Loch Ness, I hope i twill be a next possible trip to make… Maybe to play it! About lunch time, we arrive to Glasgow, always dark and every time gives me an 80’s sense. The people here is much less formal than the South, I would say more direct and a little more rude, but they are really awesome people, beginning to the venue technicians that are so nice, and finishing to the guys of the bar, called The Box, that offer us to organize a little afterparty after the show!]

[Easy soundcheck, a little better catering than the previous days, with a lot of beers, fresh fruits and vegetables.]

[The dressing rooms are a labyrinth, and unfortunately there for the support band is really an hole – it’s improbable to stay 9 guys in 2 square meters, so almost all the Italians scatter around the venue to change and find a little piece of relax. Paco begins to work with my Mac on the tables of the bar, for example.]

[The Rasmus are very busy with their fans until their live, and we don’t see them for all the afternoon. They’re really careful to make happy everybody, total respect, but what I see is that is not enough for the fans, and I’m sorry for a little because, in this way, the love goes beyond the privacy respect. Once you made a pic with Lauri, you talked to him a few and you gave some presents, why you continue to hunt him and break the balls? He will has to stay a few quiet to prepare his show, or to make a coffee himself, isn’t?]

[We go to the stage about 8:00 pm, and the crows starts to shout also here before the intro. They’re so hot J especially the first rows! At the middle of “The Fragile Sound” I’m stage dive (I waited for so long this moment, and I couldn’t make ‘cause of logistic problems), and I sing all the last part over the crowd, that make crazy.  Much of them, after the show, congratulate with us and tell us that they are listened us online and we liked them, but live it’s thousand times better. My voice here isn’t OK yet, I avoid to say it to the microphone from some night, seeing I’m able to speak at least, but the people appreciates so much, what a great! Here in UK the listeners are more careful and preparated, much of them want the complete lyrics and sing with us!]

[After the live, unfortunately, no afterparty; the day after is day-off and we must arrive to Sheffield where we are guests of an our friend, that opened a recording studio, and with his band OuttaPeak they’re finally finding good feedbacks… other than Italy!]
